Naturipe Sees Excellent Michigan Blueberry Shipments in Coming Weeks

By |

Naturipe Farms anticipates shipping a good crop of Michigan blueberries, with peak loadings from mid-July through mid-August, but lasting into mid September.

The company, which has an office in Grand Junction, likes growing blueberries in Michigan because of Lake Michigan’s temperature moderating effect and the sandy loam soils. These factors create a great environment to grow blueberries near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Naturipe grows both conventional and organic blueberries in Michigan.

The company supplements its organic supply with blueberries from the Pacific Northwest, as they will be coming into peak season around the same time. Naturipe’s organic volumes are stronger from the Pacific Northwest and Peru during July and August.

California Shippers Gearing Up for Peak Strawberry Volume

By |

Shipments of California strawberries continue to increase this month building towards a peak in April.

Well-Pict Berries of Watsonville, CA grows its Southern California strawberry varieties on approximately 1,200 acres in Oxnard, CA because the coastline provides moderate temperatures and a 12-month growing season.

Shipments both conventional and organic berries are expected to be similar to recent years, Well-Pict reports. Peak loadings begin towards the end of March, beginning of April.

Naturipe Farms of Salinas, CA has increased strawberry acreage in Oxnard and additional acreage throughout the company’s main growing regions in California. It’s Southern California shipments will peak in April.

While the company will have its best volume in spring, it also expects good volumes of fresh strawberries throughout the year.

Naturipe has increased its organic strawberries acreage this year over 20 percent.

Naturipe is promoting bigger packs of strawberries this year to help counter higher freight rates. By shipping 2-pound packs, the company can get 14 percent more weight on a truck versus the 1-pound pack.

Naturipe is Shipping Muscadine Vine Drop Grapes

By |

Naturipe started shipping its proprietary Seedless Muscadine Vine Drops in the past week or so.

Native to the Southeast, the original Muscadine is a unique grape that is crisp, sweet, tart and packed with nutrients, the company says.

“We’re excited about this year’s Vine Drop crop because we expect to drastically surpass our original anticipated volumes,” says Jim Roberts, President of Sales at Naturipe.

“We’re excited to bring this uniquely seedless variety to market for consumers everywhere to experience the flavor they have always enjoyed, without the seed. We will be packing the Vine Drops in a 1 lb clamshell at a great introductory price to encourage consumers to try this wonderful fruit.”

July marks the start of Naturipe’s harvest for the seedless Muscadine in Georgia. This will continue through the first frost, which is usually in October.

As one of the U.S.’s oldest grape varieties, Muscadines come with a rich history. They were first discovered by Englishmen in 1585 on Roanoke Island, North Carolina where the Mothervine continues to thrive today. Muscadines have been long known for their use to make sweet wine. In fact, the wine industry was largely based on scuppernongs and muscadines in the 1800s and early 1900s until Prohibition.

But the deliciousness and intriguing history of these berries is not the reason they are a star superfruit. Muscadines are Mother Nature’s richest source of polyphenolic antioxidants and are packed with many good-for-you nutrients.

“Muscadines are packed with polyphenols, making them among the most nutritious fruits out there,” says Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak, Registered Dietitian and President and CEO of Produce for Better Health Foundation.

“Polyphenols are naturally-occurring, healthful compounds found in plants. Acting as antioxidants, they promote digestion and brain health; reduce inflammation; protect against heart disease and type 2 diabetes; and even reduce the risk of certain cancers,” she continues. “Add these gems to your breakfast, lunch and dinner or simply eat them as a snack, and they will do wonders for your health – and excite your tastebuds.”

By |

An expansion of of avocados in the global market has taken place at Naturipe with its first season distributing Colombia avocados in the U.S.

The company, a year-round grower-supplier of berries and avocados, says Colombia will contribute to the supply growth of avocados worldwide. Naturipe is also increasing the Colombian industry with “significant growing operations. In Colombia, we are executing a plan to have more than 2,500 acres of avocados farms in the next three years, mainly in the area of Caldas, Quindio and Antioquia to secure nearly year-round production of avocados from Colombia,” said Andres Carvallo, Board Chairman for Naturipe Avocado Farms.

“We have already planted 500 acres and have a global export business from Colombia of more than 6 million pounds. We expect our Colombian export business to grow to 45 million pounds annually in five years.”

Andrew Bruno, president of Naturipe Avocado Farms, says the company’s farms are located at various altitudes, ranging from 5,500 to 8,200 feet above sea level.

“This will give us a wider production window from October to March for our main harvest and from May to August for our secondary harvest,” he said.

“This allows us to provide our clients with quality, fresh fruit for 10 months of the year from Colombia.” Colombia gained access to the U.S. avocado market in August 2017. While volumes from the country in the U.S. market have been limited since then, it is expected to grow substantially as a supply origin over the coming years.
