Green Giant Poll Reveals Favorite Veggies from 39 States

By |

Broccoli has won for the second consecutive year in Green Giant’s annual poll of Americans’ favorite vegetable,

More than 5,000 consumers, from ages 13 to 73, took the frozen/canned vegetables company’s survey, and broccoli placed first in 39 states. The results were released in connection with National Eat Your Vegetables Day earlier this year, according to a news release.

Here are some interesting findings from the survey, which was open-ended, letting consumers choose any vegetable:

  • Potatoes ranked first only in Arkansas, a loss of four states from last year;
  • Of the 7 states choosing corn, Iowa wasn’t included. (Yes sweet corn and field corn are vastly different, but still …);
  • Despite the juicing craze that’s boosted celery prices to new heights, the fad didn’t elevate the stalk to the top in any state;
  • Cucumbers did not carry a single state, unlike in 2018, when New Mexico and Louisiana residents chose them above other vegetables; and
  • The “orange” candidate: Nevada and North Dakota opted for carrots;
  • Asparagus led Alaska polling and cauliflower was the favorite in Montana, the first times for both vegetables.

The survey, conducted through Suzy, a company that offers an online consumer insights platform, took place April 26-May 10, according to the release.

Potandon Produce Showcases New Vidalia Onion Packaging

By Potandon Produce LLCGreenGiant

Idaho Falls, ID – Potandon Produce LLC recently updated their Green Giant™ Vidalia Onion carton for the 2017 shipping season.  Last season, Potandon updated their consumer bag, which had a visible impact on the retail shipping community, prompting the update to the master case.

Potandon’s main shipping point for Green Giant™ Vidalia onions is Ray Farms, owned and managed by Danny Ray, second-generation grower and previous winner of the Vidalia Grower of the Year (2012.)  In a recent phone conversation, Danny Ray was very positive about the 2017 crop from an agronomic standpoint.  His fields were healthy with 100% stand through the growing season and quality looked excellent.  This season, in addition to the legendary Vidalia sweet onion, customers can load sweet red onions at Ray Farms.

Ralph Schwartz, Vice President of Sales for Potandon, also weighed in on this year’s crop.  “We’re seeing yields increased over last season in the 15%-20% range and there are plenty of onions available from the Vidalia region.  The increased yields are the direct result of an exceptionally mild growing season, with no major weather events”.  Over the next three weeks, Potandon will ship onions from the field, afterwards moving to shipping from storage right around June 1st.  The current crop profile is 30% Mediums and 70% Jumbo and larger sizes.   Demand is expected to increase significantly over the next few weeks as Memorial Day nears.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Vidalia onion trademark.  Vidalia onions are the state of Georgia’s number one vegetable commodity and are a major contributor to the state’s economy.

Look for These Greenhouse Tomatoes

By |

Good news on the tomato front in retail supermarket stores.  Another source is available for greenhouse grown tomatoes, which are the closest thing you’ll find to those tasty homegrown tomatoes we all crave during the summertime.

Grape tomatoes are now arriving in stores that are grown by Delta, British Columbia headquartered Winset Farms.  However, look for the clamshell packages under the Green Giant label, with is the company marketing the product for the Canadian-based firm.  The tomatoes are actually being grown in greenhouses in Santa Maria, CA.

Even better news is that by spring there will be beefsteak, roma and vine tomaotes made available to consumers.

Not sure how big the production is, so it will be interesting to see what retail chains are carrying the tomatoes.
