Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Shipments Trending Upwards with Increase in Acreage

Idaho and East Oregon onion acreage will continue its upward trend in 2025.

Growers in the Snake River Valley, which runs through southwest Idaho and Malheur County in Oregon, planted 23,592 acres of onions in 2025, up from 22,583 acres in 2024, according to the National Onion Association. Annual production averages about 20 million 50-pound units.

Eagle Eye Produce of Iona, ID began its onion harvest the week of Aug. 4 in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, which was a little earlier than usual. Harvest should continue into early October.

The company, which has a year-round onion program, will have a complete line of red, yellow and white onions as well as sweet yellow onions this season. Acreage at Eagle Eye Produce is up slightly this year due to the acquisition of the Baker and Murakami warehouse in Ontario, OR.

Snake River Produce of Nyssa, OR, sees a very nice crop this year that is on schedule with similar acreage to last year.

The company ships mainly yellow Spanish sweet onions and also has some red and white varieties.

The season started after mid-August, and the company will ship storage onions into mid-April.

Owyhee Produce of Parma, ID, which grows, packs and processes potatoes, started harvesting onions July 1 and expects to have onions coming from Idaho year-round. Volume should be up a little from a year ago.

Owyhee Produce offers red, yellow and white potatoes and has a sweet red variety.

Western Onion Shippers are Reporting Good Quality and Volume for the Holidays

Ample onion supplies with good quality are expected by growers and shippers for the holidays and beyond.

The Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Committee of Parma, ID reports harvest of yellow, red and white onions has been completed for the 2024-25 season.

The means a consistent supply and quality in all sizes and colors are available for shipping.

Peri & Sons Farms Inc. of Yerington, NV completed its onion harvest in late October and is pleased with onion quality and sizing.

The grower/packer/shipper offers red, yellow and white onions along with a sweet, proprietary variety called Sweetie and a tearless sweet onion with low acid content called Sweetie Tearless. The company also ships cipollinis, shallots and some garlic.

Wada Farms Marketing Group, Idaho Falls, Idaho, finished harvesting its red, yellow and white onions in mid-October, and expects a good crop without any supply issues.

Wada Farms ships its storage crop from July to April or May then sources from other areas, such as California, Arizona and New Mexico during the summer.

Eagle Eye Produce of Idaho Falls, ID reports plenty of good-quality onions and yields this year.

About 80% of the company’s onions are sold in 25- and 50-pound bags and boxes. The rest are loaded in consumer packs.

Wilcox Fresh of Rexburg, ID focuses on Spanish sweet onions grown mainly in western Idaho and eastern Oregon.

The company’s main program runs from August to April with summer onions sourced from Southern California and New Mexico.

Idaho and Oregon are Big Time Shippers of Onions

Idaho and Oregon are unrivaled when it comes to U.S. onion growing, packing and shipping regions.

Idaho domestic truck shipments in 2023 amounted to 575.2 million pounds, with export truck shipments from the state accounting for 24.4 million pounds. Oregon was close behind, with the state accounting for 385.8 million pounds of domestic truck shipments and 44.3 million pounds of export truck shipments.

Idaho’s combined domestic and export truck shipments of onions totaled over 599 million pounds in 2023, up 16% from 515.9 million pounds in 2022. Oregon’s combined domestic and export shipments topped 429 million pounds in 2023, up 8% from 398 million pounds in 2022.

Idaho and Oregon shippers loaded onions every month of 2023, with peak supply from September through April.

In 2023, Idaho accounted for 14% of the U.S. domestic shipments and Oregon accounted for 10%.

Together the states accounted for about 1 in 4 domestic onions shipped in 2023.
