Cab Command Controller Truck Reefer Units Now Provides In-Dash Installation

ACarrierTHENS, Ga., June 28, 2017 — The Cab Command™ controller for Carrier Transicold’s Supra® truck refrigeration units has been redesigned for mounting in the dashboard, providing greater convenience and versatility for users.  Carrier Transicold is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Offering the proven functionality of its predecessor, the new controller sports an attractive, intuitive interface in a refined compact design that conforms to the universal DIN specification, enabling simple and clean installation within a truck cab’s dash.

“Operators like the Cab Command controller because of its ease of use and functionality,” said Scott Parker, product manager, truck products, Carrier Transicold. “Our latest version offers the convenience of in-dash installation or, when used with an optional surface-mount bracket, it can be located on an overhead console, underneath or on top of the dash, giving users a wider range of placement options.”

The Cab Command controller features a bright, backlit LCD display that provides at-a-glance operating information, including setpoint, compartment temperature, operating mode and status. A smooth tactile keypad has logically arranged buttons for adjusting temperatures, changing operating modes and more.

The newly redesigned Cab Command controller is now standard for both single-temperature and multi-temperature Supra units. It is also backward compatible to earlier models. Plug-and-play operation makes installation easy for Supra unit owners who require a replacement controller or simply want to upgrade to the new version.

ATHENS, Ga., Aug. 4, 2016 — Carrier Transicold today announced it will offer a customized telematics solution that will deliver advanced capabilities for its transport refrigeration units (TRUs). The new telematics solution will help fleets manage their refrigerated assets by enabling remote refrigeration unit monitoring, control and  diagnostics, data management and other value-added capabilities.

“We are excited about the opportunity to provide an advanced two-way wireless  communications system, uniquely qualified for truck and trailer units and backed by our  comprehensive dealer support network,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold & Refrigeration Systems. “Adoption of telematics by the transport industry has evolved  rapidly and is now an important tool for fleet management.”

ORBCOMM Inc., a global provider of machine-to-machine and internet of things  solutions, was selected to develop the system according to design and qualification  requirements specified by the Georgia based company.

“We launched this initiative in response to customer demand for an original equipment manufacturer-provided system for TRUs,” Appel said. “The system can be  factory-installed and will be supported by our authorized dealer network. ORBCOMM’s  experience with remote monitoring and control solutions for mobile assets complements our expertise in transport refrigeration systems. Its expansive satellite and cellular capabilities provide the scale needed to support Carrier Transicold TRUs.”

Carrier Transicold Expands Solar Panel Line

ATHENS, GA. — Carrier Transicold has expanded its line of Thin Film Flexible Solar Panels designed to help maintain peak performance of transport refrigeration unit (TRU) batteries in a more environmentally sustainable way.  The companyCarrierT is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Carrier Transicold now offers 18.5 watt (1.2 amp) and 9.24 watt (0.6 amp) solar panels, in addition to its original 28 watt (1.8 amp) panel, accommodating a wider range of user needs and budgets. The solar panels are designed specifically to maintain TRU battery charge and can be easily installed on the roofs of trailers, truck bodies and refrigerated rail cars chilled by Carrier Transicold or other systems.

Solar panels can offset the draw from accessory electrical devices, significantly reducing callout charges related to the battery. Solar panels can also help conserve fuel by minimizing the need to run the TRU engine to charge the battery.

“Our amorphous silicon, or a-Si, solar cell technology provides high performance in real world environments where daylight may be indirect or low,” said Jason Forman, marketing manager, Performance Parts, Carrier Transicold. “Unlike some other solar technologies that require several days of sun soaking to bring the panels up to full functionality, a-Si panels deliver maximum performance without sun soaking. They also begin charging at a higher voltage at a lower angle of light than some other technologies, allowing charging over a longer portion of the day, which is especially helpful in northern regions and in the winter.”

“Fleets located farther south in warmer climates will appreciate that a-Si panels do a better job of retaining their efficiency on hot days, in contrast to some other types of solar panels that can lose considerable efficiency when their temperature increases,” he added.

When exposed to daylight, the solar panels continuously charge TRU batteries, ensuring ample power for system starts and helping to avoid issues and costs associated with a weak or dead battery. Refrigeration system batteries are often tapped to power additional trailer electronics such as telematics devices, fuel-level sensors, interior lighting and other accessories. If the TRU has not been operated for some time and these accessories continue to draw power while the unit is off, its battery might not have enough charge to start the engine.

Carrier Transicold solar panels are lightweight, highly flexible and measure less than one-eighth of an inch thick. Designed to withstand the harsh transportation environment, they are waterproof and puncture-resistant and have a five-year limited warranty on power output.

Carrier Transicold Marks 10-Year Anniversary of Vector™ Trailer Platform

Carrier_TransicoldCarrier Transicold celebrated the 10th anniversary of the debut of its hybrid diesel-electric Vector™ trailer refrigeration platform in North America at the 2016 Mid-America Trucking Show last week. By coupling a high-performance generator to a diesel engine for the sole purpose of powering an all-electric refrigeration system, the Vector platform streamlined the traditional architecture of transport refrigeration units (TRU). Its hybrid diesel-electric technology eliminated many mechanical components used in conventional systems, resulting in reliable refrigeration performance with reduced maintenance needs. Carrier Transicold is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“After all these years, the Vector platform continues to remain unique among TRU designs used in North America,” said David Brondum, director product management and sustainability, Carrier Transicold. “The Vector platform design eliminated many serviceable components, such as belts, shaft seals, vibrasorbers and alternators. With fewer serviceable parts, there is less maintenance, which remains one of the key attractions of the technology,” added Brondum.

The Vector platform’s E-Drive™ all-electric refrigeration system enabled electric standby to become a standard feature. Use of electric power when a TRU is parked for loading, unloading or staging enables the diesel engine to be shut off, eliminating fuel use, noise and emissions. Any fleet with access to a 460 volt power supply can simply plug in and run the Vector unit at the same full refrigeration capacity that diesel operation provides.

Although the Vector platform was introduced to North America in 2006, the technology had already proven itself in Europe, where Carrier introduced it in 1999. Today’s 8000-series Vector units are the third generation North America units and boast significantly higher cooling capacities and operating efficiency, consuming less fuel per Btu. Designed for compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 standard for particulate emissions, the Vector 8500 single-temperature unit and Vector 8600MT multi-temperature unit also produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than prior models. The Vector 8100 is engineless – a plug-in-only unit intended as an alternative for trailers used for stationary cold storage that would otherwise use a diesel-powered unit.

“Thanks to its flexibility, efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements, the Vector platform has grown in popularity every year since its North American debut a decade ago,” Brondum said. “We anticipate it will continue to deliver outstanding value and offer regulatory compliance to North American fleets for many years.”

In the spirit of continued innovation, Carrier Transicold also showcased an expanded line of Thin Film Flexible Solar Panels at the Mid-America Trucking Show. Used for TRU battery charging, the solar panels are now offered in three different power output levels to accommodate a wider range of user needs and budgets. Additionally at the show, Carrier Transicold featured its X4™ Series of belt-driven trailer refrigeration units, Supra® diesel-powered truck refrigeration units, Comfort Pro™ auxiliary power units and more.
