A Round up of Peak Summer California Produce Shipments

By |

DSCN3806+1While peak summer California produce shipments continue, few record shipments are taking place, with the possible exception of table grapes.

Most commodities and are having normal volume, or being slightly off of average shipments. Record California grape shipments occurred last year, totaling 116.2 million boxes of grapes (19-pound equivalent).  This year, shipments are estimated to bet over 116.5 million boxes.  The San Joaquin Valley is  California’s largest grape shipping region, and loadings started earlier than usual.  As of the week ending July 4, shipments were well ahead of the prior year, amounting to six million boxes out of the Coachella Valley and the San Joaquin Valley.   This year, during the same period, 9.2 million boxes were shipped.  The vast majority California grape shipments will take place  after September 1st, when as much as 65 or 70 percent the volume will take place during the fall an into the winter.

The Central San Joaquin Valley also has good, steady volume with peaches (averaging about 425 loads per week) as well as plums and nectarines.   There also are tomatoes, sweet corn and dozens of other vegetables loadings taking place, plus Westside district melons.

Further south in the valley in the Bakersfield area are avocados, with truckloads averaging over 1,000 per week, plus steady movement with carrots.

Moving to the Salinas area, strawberry shipments from Watsonville continue.  Lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and celery lead a wide contingent of other veggies being shipped from the Salinas Valley.  A similar situation exists just to the south in the Santa Maria shipping district, although on a smaller scale.

Western Citrus Freeze Damage Reports a Ways off; Veggies Probably Okay

By |

IMG_6810We did a report on freezing temperatures in California, as well as Arizona last week, and to be honest there’s not a heck of a lot more to report on how Western produce shipments will be affected.  But in case you missed that other report, here goes – with some additional information.

In California, freezing temperatures occurred for a few nights late last week and through Saturday a.m.  It is known there will freeze damage to mandrians and navel oranges.  How much freeze damage probably will not be known until the first of the year, if not the first week of January.  There also a limited amount of vegetables being grown in the Central San Joaquin Valley, but no word on the veggies either.

The Salinas-Watsonville area had already completed its vegetable and strawberry shipments for the season when the freeze hit.  The Santa Maria area was on the tail end of the strawberry season and the cold quickly ended what product was left.

Strawberry shipments have now shifted to Ventura County.  While the cold may actually be beneficial to the berries in some areas of the county, others located in hilly, higher elevations of the county probably will suffer losses.  We’ll also have to keep an eye on Southern California strawberries, particularly in Orange County.

It also got pretty frosty in the desert areas of California and around Yuma, AZ for desert vegetable shipments.  It is believed items such as head lettuce, leaf lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower will make it okay, although it will not be surprising if it looks a little like it has been in a fight with Mother Nature.

Shift of California Lettuce Shipments Coming in the Weeks Ahead

By |

DSCN0474Lettuce shipments from the Salinas Valley are expected to decline in coming weeks as the seasonal transition gradually shifts to the Imperial Valley in the California desert, as well as just to the East in the Yuma, AZ district.  However, it will probably be around Thanksgiving before the change is completed.  Sandwiched in between this the Huron district on the westside of the San Joaquin Valley.  Lettuce shipments from Huron should get underway about the third week of October and last about a month.

Strawberry Shipments

The Watsonville area adjancent to Salinas is loading about 500 truck loads of strawberries weekly.  There is much lighter volume coming out of the Santa Maria district, with Ventura County have very light movment as its fall season has just started.

Kiwfruit Shipments

Imports of kiwi from Chile and New Zealand are in a rapid decline, while California kiwi shipments are just gearing up. The California produce loads are predicted to hit about 6.5 million trays this season, down from 9-plus million trays last season.

California Nuts

No we’re not talking about California Gov. Jerry Brown, or the state’s assembly.  California expects to load about 495,000 tons of walnuts this season, slightly below a year ago.

Date Shipments

California is the largest shipper of dates, with shipments forecast to be up about 20 percent this year, primarily from the California desert and Yuma, AZ.

Some Not-So-Obvious California Produce Items Available for Hauling

By |

IMG_7042While there are the more obvious fresh produce loads available out of California this time of year such as Salinas Valley vegetables and San Joaquin Valley grapes, the state has significant volume with other items ranging from Asian pears to apples,  kiwifruit , persimmons, and strawberries.

Asian Pears

Asian pear loadings got underwa y in late July from the Central San Joaquin Valley and should be available into October, with normal volume expected.

Apples

Early variety apple shipments started in mid July and volume should total abouit 4.8 million boxes for the season, which will wind down this month.  Last year California loaded 7.1 million boxes of apples.  Volume this season is about 32 percent bellow the five-year average.   Primavera Marketing Inc. of Stockton and Bidart Bros. Marketing of Bakersfield account for about 90 percent of California’s apple shipments.

Kiwifruit

California expects to load about 7.5 million  of kiwi in 7-pound trays this season.  Fruit originating out of Butt County in northern California will be similar to a year ago, as will production coming out of southern areas of the San Joaquin Valley.  Kiwi shipments should continue though May 2014.

Persimmons

San Joaquin Valley persimmons is more of a speciality item with small volume compared to many California produce items, with shipments from October through Thanksgiving.  It can help fill a load and is compatable for shipments with items ranging from grapes, to stone fruit, strawberries and even artichokes.

Strawberries

Strawberry shipments have been declining as loadings shift from the Watsonville District southward to the Santa Maria area and Ventura County.  Quality hasn’t necessarily been awful this season, but at times it also has left a lot be desired.

Salinas Valley Produce Shipments not Stellar, But Still Beats Most Areas

By |

DSCN1352The Salinas Valley remains one of the most active areas for produce shipments in the nation, not to mention the world.  In the adjacent Watsonville district, strawberry shipments are averaging nearly 1,000 truck loads per week.  This doesn’t include other berries and artichokes from this area.

California strawberry shippers are optimistic about a strong fall, unless of course, something like fall rains put a damper on loadings.  Shipments to date are on track for yet another record-volume year.  In 2012, California shipper over  190 million trays of strawberries.

Salinas Vegetable Shipments

While overall Salinas Valley vegetable shipments have been okay, it sure hasn’t been a “barn burning” year for loads.  Whether it is lettuce, broccoli or cauliflower, which normal lead the pack of veggies when it comes to volume, none have been excetionally heavy.

This a a primary reason produce rates out of California have been anything but steller for this time of the year.

But keep in mind, even though California hasn’t been exceptional this summer, it still easily beats any other shipping area in country for the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables it ships.  This holds true not only for the Salina Valley, but the San Joaquin Valley.

Salinas Valley vegetables and berries – grossing about $7900 to New York City.

San Joaquin Valley stone fruit, grapes, veggies – about $5300 to Chicago.
