ATHENS, Ga., Aug. 4, 2016 — Carrier Transicold today announced it will offer a customized telematics solution that will deliver advanced capabilities for its transport refrigeration units (TRUs). The new telematics solution will help fleets manage their refrigerated assets by enabling remote refrigeration unit monitoring, control and  diagnostics, data management and other value-added capabilities.

“We are excited about the opportunity to provide an advanced two-way wireless  communications system, uniquely qualified for truck and trailer units and backed by our  comprehensive dealer support network,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold & Refrigeration Systems. “Adoption of telematics by the transport industry has evolved  rapidly and is now an important tool for fleet management.”

ORBCOMM Inc., a global provider of machine-to-machine and internet of things  solutions, was selected to develop the system according to design and qualification  requirements specified by the Georgia based company.

“We launched this initiative in response to customer demand for an original equipment manufacturer-provided system for TRUs,” Appel said. “The system can be  factory-installed and will be supported by our authorized dealer network. ORBCOMM’s  experience with remote monitoring and control solutions for mobile assets complements our expertise in transport refrigeration systems. Its expansive satellite and cellular capabilities provide the scale needed to support Carrier Transicold TRUs.”

U.S. Potato Shipments Underway for New Season

Indiana Potato Shipments

Here’s one you may not be aware of.  The red potato harvest has begun at Black Gold Farms’ operation in Winamac, IN, located about hallway between Chicago and Indianapolis.  Red potatoes for the fresh market account for  several hundred acres of Norland and Dark Red Norland varieties, which are being shipped through August.  The Winamac farm allows Black Gold Farms to ship potatoes the year-round from its own farms.  The cycle that starts each year in Texas and then transitions to North Carolina, Arkansas and Missouri before moving up to Indiana and finally to the Red River Valley in North Dakota and Minnesota.

North Dakota/Minnesota Potato Shipments

Red River Valley red potato shipments out of North Dakota and Minnesota are expected to be off 25 to 30 percent from a year ago due to weather factors.  However, shipments, which will begin in mid October, are expected to be normal for 2016-17 until storages start running out of product late in the season (May and June).  This will probably mean an earlier than normal end to shipping for most shippers.  The Red River Valley is the nation’s largest red potato shipping area.  A & L Potato Co. in East Grand Forks, MN is already packing and shipping red potatoes.  Big Lake and Long Prairie, MN, along with Wisconsin typically ship the first red potatoes of the new season beginning in August.

Wisconsin Potato Shipments

Central Wisconsin is now shipping red potatoes, with russets coming soon.  The first russets are expected this week in very light volume.  The Badger State ranks third in U.S. potato shipments. Normal volume is expected this year.

Idaho Potato Shipments

The nation’s leading potato shipper, Idaho, is expected to get underway for the new season the week of August 15th.  Normal volume is expected for the 2016-17 shipping season.

Fruit Shipping Round Up from CA, NW and MI

strawberriesNow that we are well into summer, here’s a look at California strawberry shipments, blueberries from the Northwest and New Jersey, as well as from Michigan, plus more.

For the 2016 season, California will ship nearly 80 percent of the  strawberry volume in the United States.

The 2016 California Strawberry Acreage Survey from the California Strawberry Commission notes 32,515 acres of strawberries were planted in California for the 2016 season.  This breaks down to 27,783 acres planted in the fall of last year for production in the winter, spring and summer and then 4,732 acres planted this summer for production in the fall.

California strawberries are shipped year-round in California, with the ‘late-season strawberries’ second planting often referred to as the “summer plant.”

The majority of this acreage is shipped into the fall/early winter, and primarily originates from the Oxnard and Santa Maria areas.

Watsonville strawberries and Salinas vegetables – grossing about $4500 to Chicago.

Blueberry Shipments

Oregon blueberry shipments are now coming out of the Willamette Valley region with mid- to late-season varieties.  Fresh shipments have ended a week or so early this year and now loadings are coming with “blues” out of storage.  Shipments should continue through September.

Meanwhile, peak blueberry shipments are expected through August from British Columbia and New Jersey, with both areas continuing with lighter volume through September.

Michigan Produce Shipments

Michigan could set record blueberry shipments as loadings continue this season.  However, growers are fighting a pest known as the Spotted Wing Drosophila, a nasty invasive fruit fly.  It’s requiring close attention with insecticides, are abundant, requiring stringent controls, DeGrandchamp said.

Meanwhile Southwestern Michigan also is shipping peaches and plums (Berrien County), but in much lighter volume.  The apricot season has ended.

Berian County apple shipments get underway in September, followed closely by loadings from Allegan County.

Michigan blueberry shipments – grossing about $3500 to Dallas; Michigan vegetable shipments grossing 25 to 30 percent less, depending upon destination.

New Mango Research Reveals Health Benefits

HPmangosFour new studies surrounding the effects of mango consumption suggest this superfruit has the potential to help combat adverse effects associated with high fat diets and obesity (animal study), as well as inhibit growth of fat cells (anti-lipogenic properties in an in-vivo study), slow advancement of breast cancer tumors (animal study), and improve regularity and decrease inflammation associated with constipation (human subject study). The research was presented recently at the 2016 Experimental Biology conference in San Diego, CA.
“While more research is needed, especially in humans, there is a growing body of studies that suggest mango consumption may contribute to some protective effects in relation to obesity, certain cancers, gut health, and inflammation,” said  Leonardo Ortega, Director of Research at the National Mango Board (NMB).

  • Nutrition science researcher, Babajide Ojo at Oklahoma State University, was selected by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) as one of five finalists to present his research at the 2016 ASN Young Minority Investigator Oral Competition. Ojo’s study investigated the effects of supplementing mangos (in the form of freeze-dried mango pulp) in mice fed a high fat diet on body composition, glucose homeostasis and gut inflammatory markers: tinyurl.com/zyz6dpc.
  • Chuo Fang, PhD, of the department of Nutrition and Food Science at Texas A&M University investigated the potential role of mango and its microbial metabolites in regulating lipid metabolism and adipogenesis via the activation of AMPK in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes: tinyurl.com/zwe78kq.
Breast Cancer
  • Researcher Matt Nemec, of the Interdisciplinary Program of Toxicology at Texas A&M University, studied the anti-proliferative activities of pyrogallol, an intestinal microbial metabolite of gallotannin, a mango polyphenol, on mice with ductal carcinoma in situ breast cancer (DCIS): tinyurl.com/ze3y5kx.
Constipation

Associated Grocers, Affiliated Foods Plan to Merge

DSCN7623Associated Wholesale Grocers and Affiliated Foods Midwest Cooperative plan to merge their distribution businesses.

The transaction, which is subject to the approval of Affiliated Foods Midwest shareholders, is expected to close later this year, according to a news release.

“This exciting endeavor is exactly what we need to allow our retailers to compete, grow and be profitable,” Martin Arter, president and CEO of Affiliated Foods Midwest, said in the release.

Associated Wholesale Grocers currently supplies members that operate more than 3,000 stores in 30 states. Affiliated Foods Midwest supplies members that operate more than 800 stores in 15 states.

Barring any changes, members of both cooperatives will be members of Associated Wholesale Grocers when the deal is finalized.

“Expanding our collective distribution areas into several new adjoining states and adding over 800 new member stores will make our unified cooperatives stronger together, leveraging not only the additional scale and buying power but also employing and implementing the best practices of each that have been developed over the 80 to 90 years that our respective cooperatives have been in business,” David Smith, president and CEO of Associated Wholesale Grocers, said in the release.

The Rise of JackFruit as a Meat Alternative

JackFruitEver heard of jackfruit?  Some are considering it America’s next big meat alternative.

Diners familiar with Indian kathal ki biryani, Vietnamese sinh to mit, or Filipino halo-halo may already be familiar with the jackfruit, that relative of the fig that can grow to an enormous size and smells either exquisitely perfumed or nauseating, depending on the person.

It has been used as an alternative in Asia for possible thousands of years as a meat alternative. according to Daniel Staackman of Upton’s Naturals, a vegan food company/cafe that sells pre-seasoned and pre-packaged jackfruit among its line of products.

The jackfruit tree that is easily grown and drought-resistant, with very nutritious fruit that happens to bear a striking resemblance to meat when cooked. Every part of this native Southeast Asian tree can be used.  In fact, green jackfruit, aka the “meaty” part of the fruit usually only available canned in the United States, is actually the entire fruit —€” rind, flesh, and seed —€” before it has had a chance to mature (or grow to up to 100 pounds).

There are a number of companies selling the pre-cooked and seasoned fruit as a meat substitute, with a rapidly growing market across the U.S.  By marketing the young fruit as healthful vegan food, brands have found a way to use the fruit at early stages, when it is much easier to preserve and ship.   And many restaurants and brands have recently started marketing jackfruit as a “vegan pulled pork,” citing other vegan cooks and recipe developers as inspiration.

But while it might seem like this fruit —€” a far cry from slow smoked pig —€” came out of nowhere in the United States, its development as profitable product has been happening simultaneously in India, a country where (according to advocates and entrepreneurs) currently 80 percent of the jackfruit grown goes to waste. But how are groups in both countries — from agricultural experts to vegan chefs — developing the supply chain and market for this fruit?  And could the jackfruit be key to fighting food insecurity worldwide?

The reason we weren’t already eating jackfruit all the time is that jackfruit is difficult to work with. “A whole jackfruit is a commitment. They can be the size of a toddler,” says cookbook author Andrea Nguyen, whose books Into the Vietnamese Kitchen and Asian Dumplings feature jackfruit recipes, albeit for the fully ripe fruit. The resin under the rind sticks to anything that isn’t oiled, and gloves must be worn to break it down. Its smell when fully ripe is also too close to that of the infamous durian for many people.

 Jackfruit is grown in many countries, but India — with a vegetarian population in the hundreds of millions —€” is the only one with a history of using the young fruit as a stand-in for meat, most often in stir-fries, curries, and a popular rice dish called kathal ki biryani. The Bengal word for the fruit translates as “tree mutton” or “the meat which grows on a tree.” In northern India, it’s known as Brahmin’s meat, or “meat” for the revered portion of the Hindu population made of priests, teachers, and religious scholars.

New Projects for SweeTango Apples are Released

NextBigLake City, Minn. – Members of the Next Big Thing Growers’ Cooperative recently released their estimates for the 2016 crop of SweeTango, the sweet, tangy, and remarkably crunchy apple that was developed by the University of Minnesota to feature the best characteristics of the Honeycrisp and Zestar! apple varieties.

The projected crop yield is 450,000 standard 40-lb boxes, which is an 18% increase over last year’s crop of 380,000, and 9% larger than the 2014 harvest of 413,000 boxes.

Preliminary projections estimated a yield of 465,000 boxes for 2016, however severe storms on July 8 in Suttons Bay in northern Michigan produced hail up to 2” in diameter that caused extensive damage to the crop in that region, thereby reducing the overall estimate.  Other growing regions across the U.S. and Canada have not been adversely affected by weather to date.

The timing of the harvest varies by growing region, as orchards are spread across differing climates in locations like Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and Nova Scotia, Canada.  Washington will begin harvest first in early August, which means SweeTango will start appearing in the market around Labor Day.

As the SweeTango apple crop has continued to grow over the past decade, so does the length of the season. Once a hyper-seasonal fruit due to limited yields from a relatively small number of young orchards, SweeTango’s season is now expected to extend from early September to late December.  This is great news for SweeTango’s enthusiastic and loyal consumer following.

Theron Kibbe, executive director of Next Big Thing Growers’ Cooperative noted, “We are looking forward to a good size SweeTango crop of excellent quality, with sizes that retailers are successful with. We have a robust marketing program in place that will drive shoppers to stores with SweeTango apples on their lists. We also will be partnering with retailers with in-store activities designed to increase trial and introduce new shoppers to SweeTango’s tangy-sweet flavor and exceptional crunch.”

Shipping Updates from Georgia and the Northwest

DSCN7767Georgia peach shipments enter the final weeks of the season, while Vidalia onions continue providing consistent, steady loads.  In the Northwest pears, potatoes and onions are in light, but increasing volume.

Following a shipping in late  July, Ft. Valley, GA area shippers are expecting a final season surge of peaches before loadings wind down around August 16-17.  The first half of the season was off to a slow start until the middle of June, but it has ramped up and should continue for a couple more weeks.  Total Georgia peach shipments this year are expected to be up about 25 percent from a year ago.  Some shippers have already finished their season, but a couple of larger ones remain in operation.

Meanwhile, sweet onions from the Vidalia district continue to be shipped from storages, averaging about 250 truck loads per week.

Northwest Pear Shipments

Northwest pear shipments, primarily from Washington state and Oregon should be very similar to the 2015-16 shipping season, with a 2 percent increase in volume being forecast.  Growers in Washington and Oregon should produce about 18.7 million boxes of pears this season,    The initial estimate was made last spring and a revised shipping estimated is expected soon. Harvest of bartletts and Starkrimson pears was beginning in late July, with winter pears expected to begin in mid-August.

However, apple shipments continue to have the heaviest volume, even though it is late in the season, with a few early varieties already kicking off the start of the 2016-17 shipping season.  Rates to the East Coast may vary by as much $500 to a $1000.  For example, recent rates to Atlanta have ranged from $4800 to $5800, although the majority of the shipments seem to going for the higher end of this range.

Potato and Onion Shipments

Northwest potato shipments and onion shipments for the new season are increasing in volume.  In the Columbia Basin of Washington and the adjacent Umatilla Basin of Oregon potato loadings are expected to have a sharp increase as the old crop has finished and the 2016-17 is now the primary focus.  This same area also has very light onion volume, but it will increasing in the weeks to come.

A Produce Shipping Smorgasbord – Part II

DSCN7617A week ago you were presented a smorgasbord of produce hauling opportunities from around the county.  Well, here’s Part II ranging from Mexican crossings into the Lower Rio Grand Valley of Texas to Northwest blueberry loadings, Wisconsin potatoes – and more.

South Texas Produce Shipments

Mexican produce shipments crossing the border into Pharr, Tx cover a lot of items ranging from citrus to tropical fruit and vegetables.  However, no one item has real heavy volume at this time.  Among the heaviest volume commodities are: avocados hitting about 675 truck loads per week, but volume is increasing; mangos with about 500 truck loads a week and limes at about 450 trucks load each week.

Around 550 truck loads of vine ripe, as well roma tomatoes are crossing the border weekly.

There’s also many other products coming into South Texas, but in much lighter volume ranging from lemons to papayas, broccoli, carrots and cucumbers.

Wisconsin Potato Shipments

Loadings of the old 2015-16 russet potato crop had in a fast seasonal decline.  Meanwhile, the central part of the state has just started shipping a few of the 2016-17 potato crop, but we’re another month of so away of good volume.

Northwest Blueberry Shipments

Blueberry shipments are increasing from both Oregon and Washington state, as well as from British Columbia.

Washington Apple Shipments

The consistent item in the Northwest is typically apples, especially since Washington easily lead the nation in apple shipments.  Even though it is very late in 2015-16 shipping season, Washington is still average over 650 truckloads each week.

Watermelon Shipments

A week ago we cover Midwest watermelon hauling opportunities, here are some more.

California’s central San Joaquin Valley is moving around 350 truck loads per week.  On the east coast, North Carolina may be your best bet loading around 230 trucks loads of watermelons a week.

Both eastern Texas and western Oklahoma combing to ship nearly 500 trucks of watermelons per week.

Taking a Bite Out of Food Waste

With 795 million people in the world reportedly going hungry, food waste is an ugly problem to face. In the U.S. alone, it’s estimated that consumers throw away $29 billion worth of edible food each year in their homes. Walmart is especially concerned with reducing food waste – not only because we’re the world’s largest grocer, but as an integral part of our EDLC philosophy that provides you everyday low prices.

Two culprits of food wastage are confusion caused by food labels and the tossing of imperfect, but perfectly usable, fresh produce.

Consumers often mistake date labels as food safety indicators; however, most of the labels are created based on peak quality. Adding to the confusion is the different language used on labels, including “best by”, “use by” and “sell by”. That’s why, in the last year, we started requiring suppliers of nonperishable food products under our Great Value private label to use a standardized date label, “Best if used by”.

The switch will go into full effect this month and involves thousands of products.

What really got our attention was a report released in 2013 by the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic and the Natural Resources Defense Council, The Dating Game: How Confusing Food Date Labels Lead to Food Waste in America.  My team has been working on a solution since then.

After surveying our customers about how they would choose a food label that indicated a change in quality but not safety, there was a clear winner: “Best if used by”.  I expect the standard labels to have an even bigger impact on waste reduction since many of our suppliers sell products under their own labels outside of Walmart.  This is significant, as the global economic impact of food wastage comes to about $750 billion each year.

Although food waste has been making headlines in recent months, including an in-depth article in the Guardian, Walmart has been doing its part for more than a decade to create a zero waste future by affecting change in the way we do business and throughout our supply chain, especially where fresh produce is concerned.

For years we’ve worked with farmers to repurpose fruits and vegetables that may be slightly blemished or oddly shaped. These items usually make up a very small part of a harvest and aren’t a major contributor to food waste; however, we know every bit counts. A customer may not take home a triangle-shaped apple from our produce bins, but that apple is just as tasty when made into apple juice.

Earlier this year we began selling Spuglies, Russet potatoes that were less than perfect on the outside thanks to rough weather in Texas.  Working with our supplier, we found a way to offer these at a value price. Our wonky veg test at Asda in the UK was so popular, we now offer it year round when farmers have enough supply.

Because customers around the world shop very differently, our team here in the U.S. has been working for months on our first spec for this type of produce. We’re exploring the ways to make these items available while providing value to our customers and supporting farmers.
