Eastern Produce Shipments from Florida to Maine

Strawberry shipments from the Plant City, FL area have been underway for more than a month, but only in very light volume.  This is changing as available loads will show significant increases by December 10, and be in big volume around December  15-20.  Central Florida also has very light volume with cherry, grape, roma and green tomatoes.  The area also is shipping variety of vegetables.  However, this overall is seasonally a very light volume period for Florida.  Expect multiple pickups to involved with most loads.

You may even have to fill out the trailer from those Florida pick ups with a few pallets of  cabbage, greens or broccoli from Southern Georgia.  In fact, the whole Eastern seaboard extending into the Northeast and New England doesn’t hold a lot of volume, but sometimes something is better than nothing.

In eastern growing areas of North Carolina, the biggest volume is with sweet potatoes, not necessarily known for paying the best freight rates…..In upstate New York, Orange County is shipping storage onions, while central and western areas are loading cabbage.  New York apples were hit pretty hard by freezing weather earlier this year, especially from western and central shipping points.  Even the Hudson Valley did not escape the freeze, although it came out better than the rest of the state.

In northern Maine, Aroostoock County is shipping around 150 truck loads of potatoes a week.

Maine potatoes – grossing about $1700 to New York City.

North Carolina sweet potatoes – about $1500 to Atlanta.

Florida vegetables and strawberries – about $2600 to Boston.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Wishing you safe travels if you’re on the road this holiday.  Otherwise, I trust you are able to spend Thanksgiving with those you love and cherish the most.  We have so much for which to be thankful in this great country.   May God’s blessing be with each and everyone of you.

Here’s a few interesting facts about Thanksgiving.

The famous pilgrim celebration at Plymouth Colony Massachusetts in 1621 is traditionally regarded as the first American Thanksgiving. However, there are actually 12 claims to where the “first” Thanksgiving took place: two in Texas, two in Florida, one in Maine, two in Virginia, and five in Massachusetts.

The first Thanksgiving in America actually occurred in 1541, when Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his expedition held a thanksgiving celebration in Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas panhandle.

One of the most popular first Thanksgiving stories recalls the three-day celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. Over 200 years later, President Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving, and in 1941 Congress established the fourth Thursday in November as a national holiday.

Now a Thanksgiving dinner staple, cranberries were actually used by Native Americans to treat arrow wounds and to dye clothes.

Sarah Josepha Hale (1788-1879), who tirelessly worked to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday, also was the first person to advocate women as teachers in public schools, the first to advocate day nurseries to assist working mothers, and the first to propose public playgrounds. She was also the author of two dozen books and hundreds of poems, including “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

Maine Potato Hauling Opportunities Should Be Better This Season

Potato haulers should find the quality of Maine’s potato crop this year to be the best in a number of years. Last year, growers were plagued with too much water and a disease known as blight.

The Maine potato harvest was recently completed, which is always a race against finishing before the first hard freeze, which damage spuds remaining in the ground.  The majority of the state’s spuds are shipped throughout New England, the northeast and as far south as the mid-Atlantic states.

55,000 acres of Maine potatoes were harvested this year.  This is small in comparison the nation’s biggest shipper.  Idaho has increased its acreage by 25,000 every year for the past several years. This year, the state is reporting 345,000 acres. In 2011, it planted 320,000, and in 2010 it had 295,000 acres.

Idaho has increased in just two years the equivalent of the entire state of Maine’s production.

By comparison, Wisconsin has 63,000 acres, Colorado  and Maine are at 55,000, Minnesota 51,000, Michigan at 46,000, Oregon has 41,000, and New York 17,000 acres.

Added together, these states tally 332,000 acres, 13,000 less than Idaho alone produces.

Most of Maine’s potatoes are grown and shipped from Aroostock County, the state’s largest county.  It is the northern most county in the state and has a population of 71,482 as of 2011.  In the Native American language it means “beautiful language” and is aptly nicknamed The Crown of Maine, in part because of its location.

The potato is northern Maine’s primary agricultural product and in the 1940s Maine’s potato production was tops in the nation. By 1994 however, Maine had fallen to the eighth ranked potato producer and the seventh in the number of acres devoted to potato cultivation in the United States.

The number of acres of farm land devoted to potatoes has decreased in recent years because of rotational crops, conservation and fewer farmers. However, in the year 2000, Maine grew 63,000 acres of potatoes and nearly 90 percent of that was in Aroostook County.

Potato, Onion Rates will Appear More Attractive Soon

Most fruit and vegetable rates are paying significantly more than rates on potatoes and onions right now, but the difference in rates will be shrinking in the next several weeks as overall fruit and veggie volume seasonally declines and the spud and onion volume rises with the new crops.

There is over 1 million acres of potatoes planted in the USA for the crop that is now  being harvested.  That is 46,000 more acres than at this time a year ago!  Translation:  There’s a huge crop that will need to be transported to market – and the railroads can only haul a relatively small amount of it.  That means plenty of hauling opportunties this fall, winter and next spring for truckers with refrigerated equipment. 

The top nine states with the most potatoes in order of size are:  Idaho, Washington, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Maine, Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan and Oregon.

Idaho, the USA’s biggest potato producer,  will have a lot more potatoes for hauling this season.

Potato shipments from Washington and Oregon get underway in early August, with volume expected to be normal and about the same as a year ago.  Washington has about 25,000 acres of spuds for the fresh market.  The Umatilla-Hermiston potato volume may be down a little from last season.  No big deal though.

In central Wisconsin, red, white, yellow and russet potato diggings have been underway and shipments begin when the old crop is all sold, or customers begin demanding fresh potatoes from the new season, over the old ones which have been in storages forever.  The spuds becoming available will be more abundant than on average from the past five years.

Onions

Helping Western onion shipments was the early demise of the Vidalia, GA onion season.  It has created bigger demand for onions in the West and demand for trucks from places such as Bakersfield, CA and from Southern New Mexico and the Pasco area of Washington state.  Also, imported onions from Peru will begin arriving at USA ports in early August.

Idaho potatoes are grossing – about $4800 to New York City’s Hunts Point.

Nationwide Produce Shipments

Supplies of trucks from major produce shipping areas around the country appear to be mostly adequate.

One of the most active shipping areas has Mexican produce crossing the border at Nogales, AZ.  Heavy volume of vine ripes, roma, plum and grape tomatoes are accounting for about 1,200 truckloads a week, and this doesn’t include many items ranging from melons and various kinds of vegetables.

From the San Luis Valley of Colorado, over 700 truckloads of potatoes are being shipped each week.

South Texas also has significant shipments of produce, whether talking about product moving from the Winter Garden District south of San Antonio (cabbage), or citrus and vegetables from the Lower Rio Grand Valley, not to mention good volume crossing the border from Mexico, ranging from onions and carrots to tropical fruits.

In the Northeast, potatoes loadings from the Presque Isle, ME area are exceeding 100 truckloads per week.  Maine potatoes are grossing about $1700 to New York City.

Lower Rio Grande Valley produce – about $1700 to Chicago.

San Luis Valley potatoes – about $2700 to Atlanta.

Nogales produce – about $1200 to Los Angeles.

Prince Edward Island Shipping

Loadings of potatoes from shipping points on Prince Edward Island in Eastern Canada are about 30 percent ahead of normal this season.  Few spuds are shipped year around out of here, with most product finished by June.  However, due to brisker than usual loadings, shipments will probably end weeks early than normal.  This is primarily due to fewer potatoes and loadings originating from New Brunswick, as well from Aroostrock County, ME.  Thus, buyers are ordering more potatoes from PEI.

Northeast Produce Shipments

Upstate New York state is accounting for more produce shipments than the rest of the Northeast combined.  New York’s biggest volume is with apples out of the Hudson Valley, as well as areas in the Central and Western part of the state. The Western half of New York also is significant for cabbage.  Orange County New York has a moderate volume of onions, as does the Oswego area in the Central part of the state….There is also light shipments of apples from the Applachian District of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virgina….Aroostock County Maine is in the far northern part of the state and is shipping around 250 loads of potatoes a week.  Overall, the Northeast certainly isn’t a hotbed of loading opportunities, but if you are needing a load, all options should be considered.

Maine potatoes – grossing about $2100 to Philadelphia.

Western New York cabbage –  $2200 to Atlanta
